Nasir Hussain's films have been known to have superior soundtracks. Yaadon Ki Baaraat is no exception. A nightclub, a singer in bell-bottoms and R.D. Burman's swinging music. ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne’ and ‘Aap Ke Kamre Mein’ are two of innumerable seventies tracks that share these elements and more importantly the spirit. ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’ has a strong, sincere melody with shades of Western classical music. This syrupy title song appears twice in the film, once in a sanguine family situation and the other during an emotional reunion many years later. This is meant for the sentimental ear.
In style, these are the pre-disco days, with a catchy young pop sound, which became synonymous with Rishi Kapoor films. The sheer nervous energy and the infectious guitar-keyboard and strong percussion sound of these melodies make them so popular. ‘Chura Liya’ even in a thousand remixes continues to be a charmer with its deceptively simple melody. Purists and skeptics may scoff at Burman for his style but the fact that these compositions remain popular to this day is undeniable. The album is a treasure to possess.
