R.D. Burman is a composer with great instinct apart from an abundance of talent. Burman and Gulzar, who, as a composer-lyricist team have created some memorable scores like Ghar and Ijaazat pool their talents in Masoom and do a job which put simply is A-class. The strains of a sitar introduce the touching ‘Tujhse Naraaz Nahi Zindagi’, a melody crafted by R.D. Burman and written by Gulzar. Using a subtle sitar-guitar blend and a subdued tempo, the composer creates a poignant, reflective melody rendered with feeling by Lata Mangeshkar. A delightful melody sprinkled with a good dose of orchestral frolic, make the impishly rendered ‘Lakdi Ki Kathi’, a pleasure. This is one of the more ingenious children's tracks. At times using just a single guitar and percussion to complement a silken melody, Burman shows his expertise in crafting slower, more serious tracks. Deceptively simple in treatment, Masoom is a polished performance by him. In every song, he is perfectly attuned to the emotion expressed and creates melodies that are not only sound but also keenly intuitive. Of course, the playful ‘Lakdi Ki Kathi’ only emphasizes his versatility.
This is a sparkling album with a divine score.
